1. Season and sear steak on both sides- Until golden brown and no longer pink. Set aside.

2. In the same pan, saute- The onion, peppers (I didn't use), and garlic.

3. Cook until onion is translucent- And the garlic is fragrant.

4. Prepare and pour in the mixture- Of water, gravy mix, flour, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce

5. Combine everything in crockpot- Then cover and cook until meat is tender.

6. Garnish- With parsley and enjoy with mashed potatoes.
Tips and techniques
- Use low sodium or unsalted ingredients- This includes butter and gravy packets so that your dish isn't overly salty.
- Don't replace water with beef broth- Because even if it is low sodium the broth is just too over-powering.

Ingredients
- 4 tablespoon Butter Unsalted
- 2 tablespoon Oil
- 2 pounds Sirloin steak
- 1 teaspoon Paprika
- 1 teaspoon Onion powder
- 1 teaspoon Steak seasoning
- Salt To taste
- 1 teaspoon Pepper
- 1.5 cups Onion Finely chopped
- 1 cup Green pepper Finely chopped, I skipped it this time since my son is a picky eater
- 3 cloves Garlic Finely minced
- 2 cups Water
- 2 packets Brown gravy mix 0.87 oz packet each, Low sodium
- 2 tablespoon All-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½-1 tablespoon Brown sugar Adjust according to your preference, Optional
Instructions
- Heat butter and oil in a large nonstick pan over medium high heat.
- Season both sides of your steaks with paprika, onion powder, steak seasoning, salt and pepper.
- Place these steaks in the pan and cook on both sides until golden brown.
- Remove from pan and place them in your slow cooker.
- In the same pan, add onion, peppers, garlic and saute until onion is translucent and garlic is fragrant.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together water, gravy mix, flour, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar until you have a smooth mixture.
- Pour this into the pan of onions and mix until combined.
- Transfer this mixture the crockpot too and mix.
- Cover and cook on Low heat for 6 hours or High heat 4 hours or until the meat is tender.
- Garnish with finely chopped fresh parsley and serve over mashed potatoes.
Notes
- At the end, if your gravy is not thickened to your preference, you can cook uncovered on High heat for 20-30 minutes until excess liquid is reduced. You can also transfer the liquid gravy to a nonstick saucepan and cook on medium heat on stovetop until it's thickened to your liking. Then, add it back into the slow cooker over your steaks.
- If you don't like sweetness, you can omit the brown sugar altogether.
- Gravy mix packets are quite salty. I highly recommend using the low sodium ones to keep the saltiness of this meal in check. Make sure you also using unsalted butter.
- Some people like to replace water with low sodium beef broth but I feel like that's too over-powering.
- Don't skip on browning the steaks because it develops a nice browned crust and adds a deeper flavor and texture to the overall dish.
