    Key ingredients

    • Butter- Make sure it is room temperature and unsalted for best results.
    • Spices- Including paprika, salt, pepper, onion powder, and steak seasoning.
    • Oil- I like to use olive oil for flavor, but you can even use vegetable oil.
    • Vegetables- This includes garlic, green peppers, and onions.
    • Steak- The higher quality, the tastier the soup will be.
    • Brown sugar- Adds a subtle sweetness that complements the overall dish.
    • Worcestershire sauce- You may not be able to say or spell it, but you can sure taste it.
    • Flour- All-purpose works well for this recipe.
    • Gravy mix- These are so cheap and easy to find at the store.
    • Water- Helps do add moisture to overall dish.
Individual ingredients of this recipe on neutral background.

    Variations

    • Omit the brown sugar- If you don't like the sweet flavor added in.
    • Use other spices and herbs- Like rosemary, thyme, chili powder, and more to change the overall flavor profile.
    • Make it cheesy- Try a slice of swiss cheese or shred some cheddar cheese on top.
    • Add some spice- Using Cayenne pepper, chopped jalepeno peppers, or your favorite hot sauce.
    • Fry in a cast iron pan- For a more crispier texure and iron-rich food. Just be sure to still cook it low and slow for best results.

How to make easy slow cooker smothered steak recipe from scratch?

Seared steaks in black nonstick pan.

    1. Season and sear steak on both sides- Until golden brown and no longer pink. Set aside.

Finely chopped onions added to melted butter and oil in nonstick pan.

    2. In the same pan, saute- The onion, peppers (I didn't use), and garlic.

    Sauteed onions in nonstick pan.

    3. Cook until onion is translucent- And the garlic is fragrant.

Broth and gravy mixture being added to sautted onions in pan.

    4. Prepare and pour in the mixture- Of water, gravy mix, flour, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce

Gravy mixture coating the meat in crockpot.

    5. Combine everything in crockpot- Then cover and cook until meat is tender.

Fresh parsley garnish on top of the meat- Closeup shot.

    6. Garnish- With parsley and enjoy with mashed potatoes.

    Tips and techniques

    • Use low sodium or unsalted ingredients- This includes butter and gravy packets so that your dish isn't overly salty.
    • Don't replace water with beef broth- Because even if it is low sodium the broth is just too over-powering.
    • Make sure to brown the steaks before adding to the slow cooker- Because it adds a deeper flavor, better texture, and a nice browned look.
    • Use high quality steak- For best taste, flavor, and texture.
    • Adjust spices- According to your personal preference.

What sides to serve with steak and gravy?

    • Potatoes- Like or Slow Cooker Mashed Sweet Potatoes, Slow Cooker Ranch Potatoes, or Slow Cooker Twice Baked Potatoes.
    • Bread- Such as dinner rolls, garlic bread, a baguette, Slow Cooker Jalepeno Cornbread (With Jiffy), or even a homemade slice of bread.
    • Vegetables- Including Slow Cooker Green Bean Casserole, green salads, Slow Cooker Glazed Carrots.
    • Pasta- You can also serve this over noodles, like fettucine, zoodles, or even Slow Cooker Mac and Cheese.

    Recipe FAQs

How do I thicken the sauce?

Cook uncovered on high heat for 20-30 minutes to reduce liquid. Or you can also place the liquid in a nonstick pan and cook it over the stove until it thickens and then add it back to the slow cooker.

What is the best cut of meat for this recipe?

I think a nice cut of sirloin steak is best, but you can choose your favorite. Just make sure it is high quality meat to ensure good flavor and texture.

    How to tenderize beef?

I like to use a marinade that has acid in it. The key here is cooking it low and slow to create that great texture.

    Storage

    • Refrigerate- Place in a sealed container for up to 3 days.
    • Freeze- Place in an airtight container for up to 1 month, thaw in the fridge, and reheat.
    • Reheat- This can be warmed in microwave or on the stovetop.

    Ingredients

    • 4 tablespoon Butter Unsalted
    • 2 tablespoon Oil
    • 2 pounds Sirloin steak
    • 1 teaspoon Paprika
    • 1 teaspoon Onion powder
    • 1 teaspoon Steak seasoning
    • Salt To taste
    • 1 teaspoon Pepper
    • 1.5 cups Onion Finely chopped
    • 1 cup Green pepper Finely chopped, I skipped it this time since my son is a picky eater
    • 3 cloves Garlic Finely minced
    • 2 cups Water
    • 2 packets Brown gravy mix 0.87 oz packet each, Low sodium
    • 2 tablespoon All-purpose flour
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • ½-1 tablespoon Brown sugar Adjust according to your preference, Optional

    Instructions

    • Heat butter and oil in a large nonstick pan over medium high heat.
    • Season both sides of your steaks with paprika, onion powder, steak seasoning, salt and pepper.
    • Place these steaks in the pan and cook on both sides until golden brown.
    • Remove from pan and place them in your slow cooker.
    • In the same pan, add onion, peppers, garlic and saute until onion is translucent and garlic is fragrant.
    • In a mixing bowl, whisk together water, gravy mix, flour, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar until you have a smooth mixture.
    • Pour this into the pan of onions and mix until combined.
    • Transfer this mixture the crockpot too and mix.
    • Cover and cook on Low heat for 6 hours or High heat 4 hours or until the meat is tender.
    • Garnish with finely chopped fresh parsley and serve over mashed potatoes.

    Notes

    • At the end, if your gravy is not thickened to your preference, you can cook uncovered on High heat for 20-30 minutes until excess liquid is reduced. You can also transfer the liquid gravy to a nonstick saucepan and cook on medium heat on stovetop until it's thickened to your liking. Then, add it back into the slow cooker over your steaks.
    • If you don't like sweetness, you can omit the brown sugar altogether.
    • Gravy mix packets are quite salty. I highly recommend using the low sodium ones to keep the saltiness of this meal in check. Make sure you also using unsalted butter.
    • Some people like to replace water with low sodium beef broth but I feel like that's too over-powering.
    • Don't skip on browning the steaks because it develops a nice browned crust and adds a deeper flavor and texture to the overall dish.
